Tugela Falls (South Africa)

Weather…

Tugela Falls is located in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa and is widely considered one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. Situated within the Royal Natal National Park, the falls plunge over the dramatic rock face of the Amphitheater. The total drop consists of five distinct leaps, reaching a cumulative height of approximately 948 meters. The Tugela River originates on the Mont-aux-Sources plateau, just a few kilometers upstream from the precipice. During the winter months, the upper reaches of the falls occasionally freeze, creating spectacular ice columns against the vertical basalt walls. Geographically, the falls are part of the Great Escarpment, which separates the high central plateau of South Africa from the coastal regions. Visitors can access the site via two challenging hiking trails that offer some of the most spectacular mountain vistas in the country. Scientific measurements continue to spark debate over whether Tugela Falls might officially surpass Angel Falls as the world's highest waterfall.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The falls are most commonly accessed via the Royal Natal National Park or the Sentinel Peak car park. The route from Sentinel Peak provides the most direct access to the top of the falls using chain ladders.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during the summer months (November to March) when the waterfall is most powerful after rains. In winter, the falls can freeze, creating a striking sight, though paths are very windy.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is mountainous, requiring ascents via steep paths and the famous Sentinel Peak chain ladders. Hikers should be sure-footed, as the trails are rocky and can become very slippery when wet.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential for the rocky trails. Bring waterproof clothing as the weather in the Drakensberg can change rapidly, along with plenty of water and sun protection.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is available at the Sentinel Peak car park (fees apply) or at the main Royal Natal National Park entrance. Arriving early is recommended as parking capacity can be limited during peak periods.
⚠️
Safety
The chain ladders require a head for heights and caution; alternatively, there are longer routes available without ladders. Watch out for sudden mist, which can make navigation on the plateau very difficult.
⏱️
Time needed
The hike to the top of the falls typically takes 5 to 8 hours round trip. Plan for a full day to enjoy the views and to allow sufficient time for the strenuous climb and safe descent back to the start.
