Sodwana Bay Marine Reserve (South Africa)

Weather…

Sodwana Bay is situated on the pristine Elephant Coast of KwaZulu-Natal and is a key component of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its name, derived from the Zulu language, translates to 'little place on its own,' reflecting its remote and tranquil character. The bay is globally celebrated for hosting the Earth's southernmost coral reefs, which thrive thanks to the warm Agulhas Current flowing along the coast. Divers and snorkelers are treated to an explosion of marine life, including over 1,200 species of fish and approximately 100 species of hard and soft corals. A major scientific breakthrough occurred here in 2000 when the prehistoric Coelacanth, a fish long thought to be extinct for millions of years, was rediscovered in the deep submarine canyons offshore. The beaches of Sodwana are also critical nesting grounds for endangered Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles, which return every year between November and January to lay their eggs. Surrounded by towering coastal dunes and lush subtropical forests, the bay gives a unique blend of high-energy adventure and profound ecological significance.
