Port of Richards Bay (South Africa)

Weather…

The Port of Richards Bay is South Africa's premier deep-water port and home to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), the largest coal export facility in the world. Located on the northern coast of KwaZulu-Natal, it was commissioned in 1976 specifically to handle bulk commodity exports from the hinterland. Originally a lagoon, the site was extensively developed and dredged to accommodate deep-draught bulk carriers. In addition to coal, the port processes massive volumes of ores, minerals such as titanium and zircon, chemicals, and woodchips. It is linked directly to the coalfields of Mpumalanga by a dedicated heavy-haul rail line, the Richards Bay Coal Line. The industrial growth of the city of Richards Bay is inextricably linked to the port's success, attracting major aluminum smelters and fertilizer plants to the region. Ongoing infrastructure improvements aim to further enhance its handling efficiency for dry bulk and break-bulk cargo.
