Lake St. Lucia (South Africa)

Weather…

Lake St. Lucia is the largest estuarine system in Africa, forming the core of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which became South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The lake system stretches approximately 80 kilometers in length and 21 kilometers in width, covering an area of about 350 square kilometers. It is a highly dynamic environment where freshwater from five rivers meets the saline waters of the Indian Ocean, creating a unique habitat for a vast array of wildlife. The lake supports the largest population of hippos (over 800) and crocodiles (over 1,200) in Southern Africa. Ornithologists identify it as a critical site, hosting over 500 bird species, including significant breeding colonies of pink-backed pelicans and greater flamingos. Historically, it was named by Portuguese mariners in 1554 after Saint Lucy. The surrounding area features some of the highest vegetated coastal dunes in the world, acting as a natural barrier between the lake and the Indian Ocean, preserving a complex mosaic of ecosystems.
