Durban City Hall (South Africa)

Weather…

The Durban City Hall is a magnificent example of Edwardian Baroque architecture and serves as the administrative center of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Completed in 1910, the building was designed by architect Stanley G. Hudson, who famously modeled it after the City Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The structure is renowned for its grand central dome, which rises 48 meters above the ground and is covered in copper. The exterior is decorated with intricate sculptures that represent various themes including art, commerce, industry, and music. Inside, the building houses not only municipal offices but also the Durban Art Gallery and the Durban Natural Science Museum, making it a cultural hub. The grand auditorium has hosted countless civic events and performances over the last century, maintaining its status as a focal point of public life. Its Belfast-inspired design reflects the architectural connections shared across the British Empire during the early 20th century.
