Weather…

The Drakensberg, meaning 'Dragon's Mountains', is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, spanning over 1,000 kilometers along the eastern plateau of the subcontinent. Its highest peak, Thabana Ntlenyana, reaches an elevation of 3,482 meters in Lesotho. The range was formed approximately 180 million years ago through massive volcanic activity, resulting in the thick basalt capping that characterizes its dramatic escarpments. To the Zulu people, it is known as uKhahlamba, the 'Barrier of Spears', a reference to its jagged and imposing silhouette. The area is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for both its exceptional natural beauty and its rich cultural heritage, containing thousands of San rock art sites dating back over 4,000 years. It serves as South Africa's primary watershed, with the Tugela Falls, one of the world's highest waterfalls, dropping 948 meters from the escarpment. The high-altitude environment supports a unique Afro-alpine ecosystem with numerous endemic species of flora and fauna, including the endangered bearded vulture.
