An der Schmücke is a recently established town in Thuringia's Kyffhäuserkreis, formed on January 1, 2019, through the merger of Heldrungen with several neighboring communities. Geographically, the area is defined by the fertile Thuringian Basin and the adjacent Schmücke hill range. The town's historical anchor is Heldrungen, which is globally recognized for its massive water castle. This Renaissance-era fortress is architecturally unique, featuring double moats and formidable bastions. Historically, it served as a state prison, famously holding the peasant war leader Thomas Müntzer. The local economy remains deeply rooted in agriculture and food processing, with a long-standing tradition of onion and leek cultivation. Its strategic position near the A71 motorway has also facilitated its growth as a regional logistics hub. Nature enthusiasts enjoy the scenic trails across the Schmücke hills, which offer wide vistas overlooking the Unstrut Valley.
