Pavuvu Island (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Pavuvu, the largest of the Russell Islands, gained wartime notoriety as the primary rest and rehabilitation base for the U.S. 1st Marine Division. After the islands were occupied by Allied forces without opposition in February 1943, Pavuvu was selected in 1944 as a staging area to prepare troops for the upcoming invasion of Peleliu following their deployment on New Britain. The island became infamous among Marines for its miserable living conditions, characterized by ankle-deep mud, swarms of land crabs, and the stench of thousands of rotting coconuts. Despite the lack of proper amenities and the psychological toll of the environment, the division conducted rigorous combat training among the coconut groves. Originally a sprawling plantation owned by Unilever, Pavuvu was transformed into a massive military encampment with makeshift barracks and logistical facilities. Today, while nature has reclaimed much of the base, Pavuvu remains a poignant site in the history of the Marine Corps' Pacific campaign.
