East Rennell forms the southern third of Rennell Island and is the largest raised coral atoll in the world. In 1998, it was designated as the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the Solomon Islands. Its most striking feature is Lake Tegano, the largest inland lake in the Pacific islands, which was once the atoll's central lagoon and now contains brackish water. The lake is home to numerous endemic species, including the Rennell sea krait (Laticauda crockeri), found nowhere else on Earth. The dense rainforests of East Rennell have an average canopy height of 20 meters and provide habitat for many endemic bird species. The local population, who are of Polynesian descent, manage the land through traditional tenure systems that support its heritage status. However, since 2013, the site has been listed on the World Heritage in Danger list due to threats from logging and invasive species. The isolation of the island has fostered a unique biological ecosystem that is invaluable to global science and conservation.
