Stična Abbey is the oldest monastery in Slovenia, founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks. The monastery quickly grew into a major religious, cultural, and economic center for the region. Its architecture is a memorable example of Romanesque design, later enhanced with Gothic and Baroque elements, with its cloister and well-preserved frescoes considered among the most beautiful in Central Europe. For centuries, Stična was famous for its scriptorium, where important medieval manuscripts were produced in Latin and early forms of the Slovenian language. After the monastery was temporarily dissolved in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II, the Cistercians returned in 1898 and continue their spiritual mission today. The complex currently houses the Slovenian Museum of Religion, showcasing valuable sacred art and documents related to ecclesiastical history. The abbey is also renowned for its herbal medicine tradition, producing natural remedies based on the historic recipes of Father Simon Ašič.

The abbey is open for visits; entry to the cloister and church is possible, while some monastery parts are off‑limits. Guided tours are usually available.

Opening hours follow the monastic prayer schedule; the church is usually accessible all day. In summer months visiting hours are extended - best to check the website in advance.

Photography without flash is usually allowed in the church and cloister. In the claustrum areas, photography is not permitted - look for signs.

For a tour of the church, cloister, and small museum, allow about one hour. If you join a guided tour, it extends to roughly 90 minutes.

The abbey is near Ivančna Gorica and easily reachable by bike or car. Combine the visit with a hike along the Krka River or a detour to Gradac Castle.
Getting there
Stična is reachable by bus from Ljubljana (line to Grosuplje/Stična). The bus station is about a 15‑minute walk from the abbey. By car, follow signs from the A2 motorway (Grosuplje exit).
