Smlednik Castle (Slovenia)

Weather…

Smlednik Castle is perched on a rocky hill above the village of Smlednik in the municipality of Mengeš. First mentioned in 1215, it was owned by the Bishops of Freising. In the 14th century it passed to the Lords of Smlednik, who expanded it in Gothic style. During the Ottoman wars, the castle served as a refuge for locals. It was remodeled in Baroque style in the 17th century. A fire in 1790 severely damaged the castle, after which it was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, the stump of the tower, remains of the curtain wall, and part of the palace are preserved. The ruin is a protected cultural monument offering panoramic views of the Kamnik plain and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It is accessible via a hiking trail and is a popular excursion destination.
