Prevalje is an industrial town located in the Meža Valley of northern Slovenia, near the Austrian border. The town's history is inextricably linked to the iron industry, which reached its zenith in the 19th century when the local ironworks were among the most modern in Central Europe. During this period, the region's first rail rolling mill was established here, establishing Prevalje as a significant center for technical innovation. Beyond industry, the town is notable for its cultural heritage, particularly its literary traditions and the 'Reading Badge' movement, which originated here to promote literacy among youth. Geographically, Prevalje is situated in a narrow valley floor, surrounded by the Karawanks and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, giving the town a distinct Alpine character. Today, Prevalje is transitioning from a purely industrial site into a town offering a high quality of life and serving as a gateway for mountain hiking and winter sports in the Carinthia region.
