Vuzenica is one of the oldest settlements in the Drava Valley of northern Slovenia, situated at the foothills of the Pohorje Mountains. The town was first documented in 1238 and served as a significant administrative and ecclesiastical center during the Middle Ages. A prominent landmark is the Parish Church of Saint Nicholas, originally constructed in the Romanesque style and later updated with Gothic features. The town's history is deeply intertwined with the Drava River and timber rafting, as Vuzenica was once a vital transshipment point for wood transported downstream. The ruins of the old Vuzenica Castle still stand on a hill overlooking the settlement, recalling the site's historical strategic importance. Geographically, the region features a blend of Alpine foothills and riverside plains, providing well-suited conditions for forestry and mountain tourism. The town retains its medieval layout and appeals to visitors with its authentic atmosphere and the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape.
