Mežica Lead and Zinc Mine (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Mežica Lead and Zinc Mine, located in northern Slovenia beneath Mount Peca, possesses a rich mining heritage spanning over 350 years. Organized extraction began in 1665, though archaeological evidence suggests that ore was collected here as far back as Roman times. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it evolved into a major metallurgical hub for the Eastern Alps region. Throughout its operational history, miners excavated more than 800 kilometers of underground tunnels, a small portion of which is preserved for tourism today. Following the cessation of mining activities in 1994, the complex was converted into a unique underground museum and adventure park. Today, visitors can experience the mine via a traditional mining train, mountain bikes, or even kayaks through flooded lower levels. The mine is also world-famous among mineralogists for its exceptional crystals, particularly wulfenite and calcite. It is currently a key component of the UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanke, supporting local sustainable tourism.
