Sereď stretches along the right bank of the Váh River in the fertile Danubian Lowland of southwestern Slovakia and is a traditional industrial town. The city has a long history dating back to its time as an important waterway for the timber trade (rafting). The modern economic foundation of Sereď was laid in the 20th century with the establishment of numerous factories, foremost the well-known Sedita bakery (maker of Horalky wafers) and the large sugar factory. The Classical Esterházy Castle, although in need of renovation, remains a testament to the city's aristocratic past and is surrounded by a beautiful city park. Sereď has also gained international recognition through the Holocaust Museum, which is located on the site of a former labor and concentration camp, serving as a moving and indispensable memorial.
