Primatial Palace (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Primatial Palace in Bratislava is one of Slovakia's most exquisite Neoclassical buildings and a site of immense European historical significance. Constructed between 1777 and 1781 for Cardinal József Batthyány, it was designed by the acclaimed architect Melchior Hefele. The pale pink facade is topped by a massive cardinal's coat of arms and allegorical statues. The palace's most famous room is the Hall of Mirrors, where the Peace of Pressburg was signed on December 26, 1805, between Napoleonic France and the Austrian Empire following the Battle of Austerlitz. A major cultural sensation occurred in 1903 during renovations when six rare 17th-century English tapestries from Mortlake, depicting the tragic myth of Hero and Leander, were discovered hidden behind the walls. Today, the palace serves as the seat of the Mayor of Bratislava, yet it remains open to the public, showcasing its ceremonial halls, the Chapel of St. Ladislaus, and a fine art gallery. The inner courtyard features the remarkable St. George Fountain, a masterpiece of Baroque sculpture.
