Nitra Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Nitra Castle is one of Slovakia's oldest and most historically significant monuments, serving as the historical core of the city of Nitra. Perched on a hill protected on three sides by the Nitra River, it was a major power center during the 9th century for the Principality of Nitra and later the Great Moravian Empire. The dominant feature of the castle complex is St. Emmeram's Cathedral, which uniquely integrates three different architectural structures dating from the 11th to the 17th centuries. For over a millennium, the castle has functioned as the seat of the Bishopric of Nitra, successfully withstanding numerous sieges, including those by Mongol and Ottoman forces. Despite significant Baroque remodeling in the 18th century, parts of the original Gothic fortifications and Romanesque details remain visible. Today, the area is an animated spiritual center and houses a museum showcasing precious sacral art and archaeological findings from the early Slavic period.
