Čachtice Castle
Čachtice Castle is situated on a hill in the Little Carpathians and is world-renowned primarily as the residence of the infamous Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who lived here in the early 17th century. The castle was built in the 13th century as a border fortress of the Hungarian Kingdom to monitor the trade route to Moravia. Originally constructed in Romanesque style, it was later expanded with Gothic and Renaissance features. Following the death of Báthory in 1614, who spent her final years here under house arrest, the castle changed owners several times and was severely damaged during the Rákóczi Uprising in 1708. Since then, it has been a ruin, though it remains a popular site due to its dark legends and dramatic scenery. Major restoration work conducted between 2012 and 2014 stabilized the walls and made the site safe for visitors, allowing public access to the historic remains and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
