Sátoraljaújhely is a historically significant town in Northeastern Hungary, located at the foot of the Zemplén Mountains on the Slovak border. For centuries, it served as the seat of Zemplén County, acting as a vital administrative and cultural hub. The town's name refers to the tent-shaped hills that encircle the settlement, creating a unique and pretty landscape. It is deeply connected to major figures of Hungarian history, including Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II and Lajos Kossuth, who delivered his first speech here. Sátoraljaújhely is also considered the cradle of the Hungarian language reform, as the home and museum of Ferenc Kazinczy are located in its Széphalom district. As part of the Tokaj wine region, the town has the UNESCO-listed Ungvári cellar system, a vast labyrinth of historic wine storage. Recently, the town has rebranded itself as a center for active tourism, featuring the Zemplén Adventure Park with the longest chairlift in Hungary and an expansive zip-line system. Its urban fabric is rich with Baroque architecture, including the impressive County Hall and a unique museum located within a functioning prison complex.
