Devín (Slovakia)

Weather…

Devín Castle stands on a massive rock high above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. It is one of Slovakia's most significant archaeological sites, with a history reaching back to Celtic and Roman times. The castle was a key fortress of the Great Moravian Empire and was blown up by Napoleon's troops in 1809, giving it its current characteristic appearance as a romantic ruin. Visitors can explore the upper parts of the castle, which house historical exhibitions, and enjoy the dramatic panoramic views. Especially striking is the small 'Maiden Tower' perched in isolation on a rock needle above the water. Devín is also a place of remembrance; during the Cold War, the Iron Curtain ran through here, commemorated today by the 'Gate of Freedom' monument. Devín is located just about 10 kilometers from Bratislava's city center and is easily accessible by bus, bicycle, or in summer by boat. The area is famous for its currant wine (rýbezľové víno), which is a must-try in the local cellars. A visit is especially recommended in clear weather at sunset.
