Slavín (Slovakia)

Weather…

Slavín is a monumental Soviet war memorial and military cemetery in Bratislava, built to commemorate the Red Army soldiers who fell during the liberation of the city in April 1945. Situated on a hill overlooking the capital, the complex was constructed between 1957 and 1960 according to the designs of Slovak sculptor Ján Svetlík. The central feature of the memorial is a 39.5-meter-high obelisk topped with a 7-meter-tall statue of a Soviet soldier unfolding a flag. A total of 6,845 Soviet soldiers are buried at the site in six mass graves and 317 individual graves. The complex also includes a ceremonial hall decorated with mosaics and bronze reliefs depicting the struggle against fascism. Due to its elevated location, Slavín provides one of the best viewpoints over Bratislava, providing a full panorama of the city. Today, it remains a significant site for official state commemorations and a prominent example of socialist realist architecture in Slovakia.
