Church of St. George Svätý Jur (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Church of St. George in Svätý Jur is a prominent example of early Gothic sacred architecture in western Slovakia. The building's core dates back to the 13th century, with major Gothic expansions completed in the 14th century. A unique architectural feature of the site is the free-standing wooden belfry dating from 1654, which was constructed entirely without the use of iron nails. Inside the church, the most precious artifact is the sandstone main altar from 1527, which represents the transition from Gothic to Renaissance style and depicts scenes from the life of St. George. The church was originally fortified to provide protection during raids, and remnants of the defensive walls are still visible today. Located at the foothills of the Little Carpathians, the structure serves as a testament to the town's historical significance as a religious and viticultural center.
