Šúr Nature Reserve (Slovakia)

Weather…

Established in 1952, the Šúr Nature Reserve is a unique wetland system located in the immediate vicinity of the capital, Bratislava, and ranks among the most significant remnants of Pannonian alder fen forests in Europe. The 6.5-square-kilometer area represents a remarkable relict of a prehistoric bog and swamp landscape that once characterized large parts of the Danubian Lowland. Geologically and botanically, the reserve is characterized by extreme diversity; it encompasses dense reed beds, wet meadows, and rare Pannonian sand dunes in the drier fringe zones. Due to its outstanding ecological function as a resting and nesting site for countless migratory and water birds, Šúr has been included in the list of internationally protected Ramsar sites. Furthermore, the microclimate provides well-suited conditions for rare insect species and highly endangered swamp plants, the study of which attracts international scientists. Guided wooden boardwalks allow visitors to penetrate deep into this otherwise inaccessible and fascinating aquatic landscape.
