Best season

The dry season from November to April is the best time to see antelopes and leopards in the savanna of Sankanya Nature Park. In the rainy season (May to October) grass is tall and animals are harder to spot, but the landscape is green.

Best time of day

Dawn and dusk are the most active times for savanna mammals. During the midday heat most animals rest in shade, so drives between 6-9 am and 4-6 pm are most productive.

Never leave your vehicle in the savanna - the danger from predators is real. Do not feed animals and avoid loud noises that could startle herds.

What to bring

Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are essential for the wide distances in the savanna. Light, earth-toned clothing, a hat, sun protection, and plenty of water are equally important.

Getting there

Sankanya Nature Park is in the far north of Sierra Leone, near the border with Guinea. Access is best from Kabala with a off-road vehicle; the drive takes about 2-3 hours.

Leopards are nocturnal and extremely shy - even on multi-day stays a sighting is not guaranteed. Focus on the more frequently seen antelope herds and enjoy the pristine savanna.
