The Wara Wara Mountains are located in northern Sierra Leone, situated immediately north of the district capital Kabala in the Koinadugu District. These distinctive geological formations consist of massive granitic inselbergs that rise steeply from the surrounding savanna landscape. The peaks provide extensive views over the northern highlands and hold significant cultural importance for the local Limba people. Historically, the caves and hidden plateaus within the mountains served as places of refuge during tribal conflicts and the colonial era. The vegetation on the granite outcrops is specialized, consisting mainly of grasses, lichens, and drought-resistant shrubs, while the valleys contain pockets of denser forest. Every January, a traditional mountain-climbing event takes place, attracting thousands of people and cementing the mountains' role as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage. Geologically, the Wara Wara Mountains are part of the Guinea Highlands and display the typical weathering of ancient African cratons exposed over millions of years.

Located directly adjacent to Kabala, the mountains are accessible via footpaths starting from the town center, providing a straightforward route for visitors arriving by road from Makeni.
