Masingbi is a small town in Tonkolili District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, lying north-east of Magburaka, halfway between Makeni and the Kono diamond fields. The town is the headquarters of Kunike Sanda chiefdom and has for decades been an important market and transport node on the main road into the interior. In the 1990s and 2000s, Masingbi was the focus of several mining projects: deposits of iron ore and bauxite were prospected nearby, and the opening of African Minerals' Tonkolili iron-ore mine in the early 2010s turned the town into a logistical stopover for truck convoys and labor flows. The local economy still rests on rice, groundnut, cassava, and yam farming, as well as a lively weekly market. The townscape is marked by a string of schools, a health center, mosques, and churches. Masingbi is also known for its blend of Temne, Kuranko, and Limba inhabitants and for a lively traditional music scene.
