This geological formation is part of the ancient Archaic craton and consists predominantly of greenstone belts rich in mineral resources. The mountains are internationally renowned for their massive iron ore deposits, particularly in the Tonkolili area, which hosts one of the largest magnetite mining projects in Africa. In addition to iron, the range contains substantial gold deposits that have been exploited since the early 20th century. The landscape is characterized by forested ridges and deep valleys that provide important tributaries to the Rokel River. Despite intensive mining activity, portions of the Sula Mountains still harbor undisturbed montane forests with diverse flora and fauna. The economic significance of the region is immense for Sierra Leone's national development, yet it poses major challenges for environmental conservation and sustainable land management. The mountains also act as a climatic barrier between the coastal plains and the interior plateaus.

Accessing the remote Sula Mountains requires driving over rough, unpaved roads into the central interior of Sierra Leone, often starting from towns like Makeni. Reaching the actual hiking areas involves utilizing 4x4 vehicles and negotiating local village tracks.

Expeditions are realistically only feasible during the core dry season months, typically from December to March, when the unpaved access roads dry out. During the heavy rains, the region becomes excessively muddy and largely inaccessible.

The range features rolling highlands covered in a mix of tall savanna grasses and isolated patches of thicker forest. There are virtually no maintained trails, so hikers must push through scrub vegetation on uneven, rocky slopes.
