Makeni is the largest city in the Northern Province and is regarded as the economic engine of northern Sierra Leone. The town lies about 180 kilometers north-east of Freetown in the Temne heartland; it was founded in the 19th century as a small market settlement and was later raised to a district headquarters under British rule. Today, Makeni hosts the University of Makeni, one of the country's leading private universities, and is an important administrative, educational, and health center. The town is surrounded by extensive rice fields, cassava and groundnut plantations and is a key transshipment point for agricultural produce from Bombali, Tonkolili, and Koinadugu districts. Over the last two decades, the iron-ore mines at Lunsar and Tonkolili, as well as the bauxite and rutile operations around Mile 91 and Bombali, have turned Makeni into a major logistics hub. Landmarks include the Catholic St. Joseph's Cathedral, the central Friday Mosque, and the lively market at the foot of Wusum Hill, which gives a sweeping view across the town.
