Sumbaria is a small village in Falaba District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, lying in the country's far north on the upland savanna near the border with the Republic of Guinea. The settlement belongs to the Yalunka and Kuranko heartland and is a typical example of the remote, agrarian settlements of the northern hinterland. Thanks to its elevation, Sumbaria enjoys a relatively cooler climate, with cool dry-season nights and a shorter rainy season than the south of the country. The economy is based on upland rice, fonio, groundnuts, cassava, and yams, as well as cattle, sheep, and goats grazing on the wide upland pastures. Sumbaria has a primary school, a small clinic, and several mosques; most residents are Muslim. The monthly market draws traders from surrounding villages and nearby Guinea. Despite its relative isolation, the region has been gradually connected to wider infrastructure in recent years thanks to investments in solar power, wells, and schools.
