Kuru Hills Forest Reserve (Sierra Leone)

Weather…

The Kuru Hills Forest Reserve is located in the Kambia District of northwestern Sierra Leone, right on the border with Guinea. Established in 1955, it covers an area of approximately 70 square kilometers. Geographically, the area marks the transition between the dense rainforests of the south and the drier savanna landscapes of the north, resulting in a unique ecological mosaic. The Kuru Hills consist of granite formations rising from the surrounding plains and form important watersheds for local rivers. The vegetation is a mix of semi-evergreen forests and wooded savannas, providing habitat for a variety of primates, including green monkeys and baboons. The reserve is of great importance to the local population as it provides traditional medicinal plants and non-timber forest products. However, due to its border location, the area is vulnerable to transboundary poaching and illegal logging. Current conservation strategies rely on transboundary cooperation with authorities in Guinea to ensure the protection of the forest corridor. The Kuru Hills are an important building block for regional biodiversity and erosion control in the Kambia District.
