Kamakwie is the headquarters of Karene District, created in 2017, and lies in the north of Sierra Leone in the Limba heartland. The town is surrounded by hilly savanna and is regarded as the gateway to the Outamba-Kilimi National Park, which is home to a rich fauna of chimpanzees, hippos, and rare birds. Kamakwie has been a local administrative and market center since the 19th century and was an important post for British missionaries in the early 20th century. Today, the town is best known for the Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital, one of the oldest mission hospitals in the country's north, run by Methodist and Wesleyan missionaries since the 1920s. Its economy is based on rice, groundnut, cassava, and tobacco farming, as well as livestock and beekeeping. The weekly market attracts traders from Bombali, Kabala, and even Guinea. With the creation of the new Karene District in 2017, Kamakwie was officially upgraded to district headquarters, prompting significant investments in infrastructure, schools, and health facilities.
