Staro Selo (Serbia)

Weather…

The Staro Selo open-air museum in Sirogojno, located in the Zlatibor Mountains, is a unique testament to the rural architecture and lifestyle of Western Serbia in the 19th century. Spanning five hectares, more than 50 authentic wooden buildings (brvnare) were gathered from the region and reconstructed to their original form. The complex is divided into two areas: one showcasing traditional living culture with main houses, granaries, and workshops, while the other is used for tourism and educational workshops. The buildings are constructed solely of wood and stone, with roofs covered in shingles or straw, reflecting adaptation to the mountain climate. Staro Selo functions not only as a museum but also preserves ancient crafts like pottery and the famous Sirogojno knitting tradition. Visitors can experience firsthand how extended families lived and worked together in structures known as zadrugas. Established in 1980, the museum is protected by the state as a cultural monument of exceptional importance.
