Al-Khafji is a city in northeastern Saudi Arabia, in the Eastern Province, on the border with Kuwait. The city is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf and was founded after the discovery of oil fields in the Neutral Zone (now divided), jointly administered by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The city's economy is closely linked to oil and gas extraction. It is home to Khafji Joint Operations (KJO), a joint venture between the Saudi and Kuwaiti state oil companies. During the 1991 Gulf War, the city was the scene of the Battle of Khafji, the first major ground engagement between coalition forces and the Iraqi army. During the battle, the city was briefly occupied by the Iraqis and suffered heavy damage. It was rebuilt after the war and is now a modern, functional city that primarily serves workers in the oil industry. The city has numerous parks, recreational areas, and a seaside promenade (Corniche).
