Tarout is a city and an island in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, in the Persian Gulf. The island is connected to the city of Qatif by a 2-kilometer causeway and is part of the Qatif Governorate. Tarout is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Middle East, with the settlement's history dating back over 5,000 years to the time of the Dilmun civilization. The island was strategically located on the ancient trade routes between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. In the center of the island stands Tarout Castle (Qal'at Tarout), a 16th-century Ottoman fort built on the ruins of an earlier settlement thousands of years older. Archaeological excavations under and around the castle have unearthed numerous important artifacts, including a famous 4,500-year-old steatite statue. Today, Tarout is a densely populated area that relies on fishing, trade, and commuters working in the industrial centers of the Qatif region. The island is home to a bustling fish market, as well as numerous traditional buildings and mosques.
