Qatif Castle (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Qatif Castle, also known as Qal'at al-Qatif, was once one of the most prominent defensive structures in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. The fortress's origins likely date back to the Sassanid era or the early Islamic period, and it was utilized by various regional powers over the centuries, including the Ottomans and the Portuguese. The castle was strategically situated on a hill in the center of Qatif city, enclosed by massive walls featuring eleven towers and eleven gates. Within its protective perimeter, a densely populated residential district flourished, complete with mosques, traditional houses, and markets, serving as the historical heart of the Qatif oasis. The architecture relied heavily on local limestone and palm wood. During the 1970s and 1980s, much of the fortification and its historic buildings were demolished to accommodate modern urban development and infrastructure. Today, only a few remnants and the historical memory of the fortress's former grandeur remain. Nevertheless, the site stands as an important symbol of the rich maritime heritage and the millennia-long history of settlement in the Qatif region.
