Qatif is a historic city and oasis in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The region, inhabited since ancient times, is one of the oldest settlements in the Middle East. The Qatif oasis was traditionally a rich agricultural area, famous for its date palms, fruits, and vegetables. The city was also historically a center for fishing and pearl diving. In the 20th century, the discovery of oil transformed the region's economy, and much of Qatif's population now works in the oil industry, especially in nearby Dhahran, Dammam, and Al-Jubail. Qatif is one of the most important centers of the Saudi Shia Muslim community. The city has preserved its cultural identity and traditions. Tarout Island, connected to Qatif by a causeway, is an important historical and archaeological site, with a restored fort (Tarout Castle) and a bustling fish market. The Qatif Souq (market) is the center of local life, where everything from traditional products to modern goods can be found.
