Tarout Castle (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Tarout Castle is situated in the heart of Tarout Island in the Persian Gulf and stands as one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Eastern Province. The current fortress was constructed in the 16th century, around 1544 AD, by the Portuguese on the foundations of a much older settlement dating back to the Dilmun civilization nearly 5,000 years ago. The architecture primarily consists of a mixture of sea stones, gypsum, and local clay, featuring four massive corner towers of which three remain standing today. Historically, the fort served as a strategic defensive point to protect maritime trade routes in the Gulf from regional threats. Archaeological excavations in the immediate vicinity have yielded numerous artifacts from the Mesopotamian and Elamite eras, confirming the island's role as an ancient trading hub. Today, the castle is a central cultural symbol for the Qatif region and attracts historians interested in the prehistoric habitation of the Arabian Peninsula.
