💡 Tips

  • The summer heat is extreme; plan outdoor activities for early morning or well after sunset.
  • Modest dress is strictly observed; although the abaya is not legally mandated for tourists, wearing loose, covering clothing is highly recommended to blend in.
  • As a major junction city, it is an excellent place to refuel and rest if you are driving between Kuwait and Riyadh.
  • Public transport is very limited; use ride-hailing apps or rent a car to navigate the city comfortably.
  • The spring season (Rabie) brings green patches to the surrounding desert, making it the well-suited time for traditional desert camping (Kashta).

Hafar Al-Batin is a city in northeastern Saudi Arabia, in the Eastern Province, near the border with Kuwait and Iraq. The city is located in the Al-Batin valley, a dry riverbed that was a traditional route for pilgrims and merchants. Hafar Al-Batin was originally a simple stopover where pilgrims could find water in the desert after digging wells (the word 'hafar' means 'to dig'). The modern city grew rapidly, especially after the 1991 Gulf War, when King Khalid Military City (KKMC), one of the largest military complexes in the world, was built nearby. This massive base is the engine of the city's economy and has led to significant population growth. Today, Hafar Al-Batin is a bustling commercial center that serves military personnel and the surrounding Bedouin communities. The city has numerous markets, shopping centers, and modern facilities.
