Pico Vinte e Cinco (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Pico Vinte e Cinco, 'Peak of the Twenty-Fifth', is located in the extremely wild and inaccessible southwest of São Tomé, in the heart of Obô National Park. Its name is likely a reference to a historical date, possibly April 25th, the day of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. This part of the island is one of the rainiest and least explored. The mountain itself is a sharp, erosion-shaped peak that rises above the dense canopy of the primary rainforest. The vegetation is so dense that access is extremely arduous and is only undertaken as part of scientific expeditions. This area is a crucial refuge for the island's most sensitive endemic species, including rare amphibians and insects found nowhere else in the world.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this isolated mountain in the far southwest of São Tomé involves hiring an expert local guide and arranging 4x4 transport towards the end of the navigable southern roads.
📅
Best season
Attempting this trek is only viable during the absolute driest parts of the year, usually July and August. At other times, the wild trails turn into impassable rivers of mud.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment is profoundly wild and inaccessible, demanding continuous hacking through untouched, dense jungle. Inclines are exceptionally steep, muddy, and covered in deep roots.
🎒
What to bring
Heavy-duty jungle boots, machetes, waterproof bags, and full-body protective clothing are non-negotiable. You must carry all your own food and highly efficient water filtration systems.
🅿️
Parking
Transport will drop you at the very edge of the road network in the deep south. There are no facilities here, and any vehicles must return or wait at the nearest coastal outpost.
⚠️
Safety
This is one of the most rugged areas on the island, with zero cell reception and no rescue options. Endemic insects, venomous spiders, and sheer exhaustion are genuine hazards here.
⏱️
Time needed
Conquering this remote peak and returning safely is a multi-day endeavor. It typically requires setting up a rough jungle camp and takes at least two to three demanding days.
