Ribeira Peixe is a lively community in the Caué district of São Tomé's deep south and is regarded as the country's center of palm oil production. The settlement grew up around the former Roça Ribeira Peixe, which has experimented with large-scale oil palm cultivation since the mid-20th century. After independence in 1975, the plantation was reorganized as a state cooperative and modernized in the 2010s with European investment support. Today the factory supplies the local market with cooking oil and soap and features one of the few formal jobs in this otherwise agrarian region. Around the town, endless rows of oil palms stretch to the horizon, threaded by streams that host endemic species such as the peixe-cobra. Despite industrial use, residents have preserved their traditional way of life: women turn cassava into funge, men fish in the river mouths and on weekends the village square fills with the noise of the local football team.
