West Siberian Plain (Russia)

Weather…

The West Siberian Plain stands as one of the world's most massive and extraordinarily flat expanses of land, stretching as a seemingly endless basin between the Ural Mountains and the Yenisey River. Its exceptionally low gradient impedes drainage, resulting in a landscape dominated by vast, impenetrable wetlands and peat bogs, most notably the colossal Vasyugan Swamp. The slow-moving Ob and Irtysh rivers meander heavily across the plain, frequently causing widespread, massive floods during the spring snowmelt. Beneath this boggy, often permafrost-bound surface lies a treasure trove of global significance: some of the Earth's largest oil and natural gas reserves. While their extraction is a cornerstone of the Russian economy, it continuously poses immense ecological challenges to the delicate taiga and tundra environments.
