Vyborg Castle (Russia)

Weather…

Vyborg Castle, majestically situated on a tiny rocky island in the Bay of Vyborg, is one of the few surviving examples of Western European military architecture in Russia. Founded in 1293 by the Swedes during the Third Crusade, the castle served for over four centuries as an impregnable frontier fortress against the Novgorod Republic and later the Tsarist Empire. The architectural centerpiece is the distinctive St. Olaf's Tower, whose white octagonal spire dominates the entire city and was once considered the tallest keep in Scandinavia. During the Great Northern War in 1710, Peter the Great's troops finally managed to capture the fortress after a grueling siege, bringing it under Russian control. Today, the carefully restored grounds house a museum showcasing the Swedish, Finnish, and Russian history of the region, while regular medieval festivals bring the age of knights back to life.
