Taftan Volcano is an imposing and active geological landmark in the arid and isolated southeast of Iran, belonging to the Sistan and Baluchestan Province. It is part of an ancient volcanic arc that extends into neighboring Pakistan, becoming famous throughout the region for its continuous fumarolic activity. From its main crater, hot sulfur-rich gases and water vapor are relentlessly emitted, forming a characteristic yellowish cloud visible from tens of kilometers away. The slopes of the stratovolcanic massif are covered with thick layers of ash, porous pumice, and solidified lava flows, making the ascent an extremely demanding and visually striking experience. The local Baluch population has woven numerous ancient myths around the mountain, viewing it as an abode of hidden forces. For mountaineers, the alien, lunar-like landscape in the upper reaches remains the primary attraction.

Getting there
Access to the volcano is usually gained from the city of Zahedan or the town of Khash, from where unpaved roads lead to the starting point of the hiking trail.
