Saransk, the well-kept and dynamic capital of the Republic of Mordovia, is a shining example of a successful urban renaissance in modern Russia. Founded in 1641 as a wooden fortress on the Insar River, the city has transformed in recent decades from a sleepy provincial town into a radiant center for sports, culture, and Finno-Ugric identity. The impressive new city center is dominated by the monumental, Byzantine-inspired Cathedral of St. Theodore Ushakov, which was only consecrated in 2006 and is one of the largest churches in Russia. As a proud host city of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Saransk presented itself to the world with its extremely clean infrastructure, the warm hospitality of the Mordvins, and the spectacular, oval-shaped Mordovia Arena.
