Manpupuner Rock Formations (Russia)

Weather…

The Manpupuner Rock Formations, frequently referred to as the 'Seven Strong Men', constitute a deeply mystical and visually panoramic geological phenomenon located deep within the inhospitable northern Ural Mountains. These gigantic stone pillars of quartzite schist, reaching heights of up to 42 meters, rise entirely isolated from a barren plateau, looking for all the world like the monumental ruins of an ancient city of giants. Geologically speaking, they are the dramatic result of over 200 million years of relentless weathering; the softer surrounding rock was gradually stripped away by wind, water, and ice, leaving only the hardest quartzite cores standing. For the local indigenous Mansi people, this site is profoundly sacred and has traditionally been the subject of numerous legends, which claim the pillars are actually petrified giants that attempted to attack their tribe. Due to its extreme remoteness, far from any civilization, reaching the site remains a serious expedition.
