Kuril Nature Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

The Kuril Nature Reserve, located on the remote Kunashir Island at the southernmost edge of the Kuril Archipelago, is an ecological anomaly where intense volcanic activity meets pristine wilderness. Due to its unique geographical positioning between the frigid Sea of Okhotsk and the warmer Pacific Ocean currents, the island features a bizarre microclimate that produces a fascinating blend of northern taiga and southern subtropical flora. Amidst smoking fumaroles, boiling thermal springs, and active stratovolcanoes, wild magnolias and giant bamboo thickets grow directly alongside Siberian fir trees. The reserve actively protects numerous rare animal species, including the endemic Kuril harbor seal, the majestic Steller's sea eagle, and the endangered Blakiston's fish owl, the largest owl species on Earth. The coastlines also serve as vital resting sites for migrating pelagic birds. Strict regulations prohibiting human access to large swaths of the island have preserved this extraordinary evolutionary melting pot.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Summer (June-August) is the best time to explore the unique mix of northern and subtropical flora as well as birdlife on Kunashir. September has pleasant temperatures and fewer insects, but some animals are already preparing for winter.
🌅
Best time of day
In the early morning, bird song is most intense and you have the best chance to see rare species. Late afternoon the air cools, increasing the activity of many reptiles and insects again.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked hiking trails to avoid damaging the fragile volcanic vegetation. Collecting plants or minerals is prohibited, and feeding wildlife is not allowed.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential on volcanic soils and steep trails. Binoculars help with birdwatching, and a waterproof jacket protects against the frequent fog and rain.
🧭
Getting there
Kunashir is reachable by plane from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Yuzhno-Kurilsk, followed by local transport. The island is part of the Kuril Islands, which require special permits to visit.
🦌
What to expect
Although the volcanic landscape is remarkable, wildlife can be shy - don't expect to see rare birds on every outing. Take time to enjoy the hot springs and the impressive volcanic scenery.
