Chara Sands (Russia)

Weather…

The Chara Sands in Transbaikalia constitute a visually impressive and deeply confusing landscape anomaly: smack in the middle of the freezing Siberian taiga, a genuine desert with shifting dunes up to 30 meters high suddenly appears out of nowhere. This jarring geographic contrast is further intensified by the fact that the bright golden sand dunes are directly backed by the rugged, frequently snow-capped, and heavily glaciated peaks of the Kodar mountain range. Geologists believe this sandy basin formed during the last Ice Age, when the massive sediment deposits of a prehistoric glacial lake dried up and were subsequently sculpted into dunes by prevailing winds. For ambitious photographers and adventurers, the site is an absolute paradise, offering the unique opportunity to hike through dense coniferous forests, climb desert dunes, and trek across glaciers all in the exact same day. During winter, the sand is astonishingly covered by a thick blanket of snow.
