Culatra Island (Portugal)

Weather…

Ilha da Culatra is one of the barrier islands within the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the Algarve. Stretching approximately 7 kilometers in length, the island is accessible only by boat from Olhão or Faro and is notable for its total lack of cars and paved roads. It is home to three main settlements: Culatra, Farol, and Hangares, with a permanent population of about 1,000 residents primarily engaged in fishing and shellfish farming. The western end, known as Farol, is named after the prominent 46-meter-high Santa Maria lighthouse, which began operations in 1851. The island features vast sandy beaches on the seaward side and calm lagoon waters on its inner shore. As part of a protected area, it serves as a crucial habitat for various bird species and the Mediterranean chameleon.
