Milreu Roman Ruins (Portugal)

Weather…

The Roman ruins of Milreu, located near Estói, represent one of the most important archaeological sites in the Algarve. The complex was originally a luxurious Roman Villa Rustica, inhabited and continuously expanded from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Particularly noteworthy are the well-preserved mosaics, decorated with depictions of marine life such as fish and dolphins. The site included noble living quarters, extensive thermal bath facilities, and a temple dedicated to the god Neptune. In the 6th century, the temple was converted into a Christian basilica, and a mausoleum was added, proving the continuous occupation of the site. The ruins provide a deep insight into the luxurious lifestyle of the Roman upper class in the province of Lusitania. Today, the excavations are open to visitors and are complemented by an informative visitor center.
