Udzungwa Mountains National Park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains and is often referred to as the 'Galapagos of Africa' due to its isolation and extremely high density of endemic species. Unlike many other Tanzanian parks, there are no roads for car safaris here; the area is explorable exclusively on foot via hiking trails. This makes the park a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers who want to experience the untouched wilderness of African mountain rainforests. The absolute highlight of the park is the Sanje Waterfall, plunging over 170 meters, at the base of which you can swim in natural rock pools. The hike there provides dramatic views across the Kilombero Valley. Biologically, the park is invaluable: it is home to rare primates such as the Udzungwa Red Colobus and the Sanje Mangabey, which are found nowhere else in the world. Bird lovers will also be delighted by over 400 species. Visitors should prepare for a warm, humid climate and bring good hiking boots. Near the park, there are simple guesthouses and camping options. Access is usually from Morogoro or Mikumi. The best time for hiking is the dry phase from June to October, although the park impresses year-round with its lush green splendor.
